This series consists of operation orders, reports, photographs, maps, memorandums, equipment lists, plans and operations, cables, handbooks, messages, letters, withdrawal notices, notes, correspondence, directives, and other records of OSS operations in Greece, Spain, France, Italy, North Africa, Portugal, India, China, and Southeast Asia, from field offices at Athens, Bari, Bern, Burma, Cairo, Calcutta, Casablanca, Caserta, Heidelberg, Kunming, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Paris, Rome, and Washington. Also included are files of the Washington Director's Office and a history of the OSS and the French Resistance.

Virginia Hall had a knack for languages and finding adventure. After attending college and graduate school at tops universities in the U.S., she went on to study and travel in Europe in the early 1930s, eventually taking a clerical position with the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw, Poland. Her next assignment took her to Izmir, Turkey, where she was in a serious hunting accident and lost her left leg below the knee.
